#002 A Tale of Coexistence
Despite the whispers of AI-induced job losses, the reality is far more assuring - AI is not coming for your job, but to work alongside you due to the risk of "model collapse". This phenomenon, as discussed in Robert McMillan's Wall Street Journal article "AI Junk Is Starting to Pollute the Internet," occurs when large learning models become less useful as they digest data they have created.
The increasing use of AI to generate content overall could contribute to this issue. As AI-generated content proliferates, these models may end up training on their own outputs, leading to a degradation in the quality of their predictions over time. This is akin to repeatedly scanning and printing the same photo, which eventually reduces its detail.
However, this challenge is not insurmountable. Ilia Shumailov, a research fellow at Oxford University’s Applied and Theoretical Machine Learning Group, suggests that there are potential technical workarounds to this problem. Companies that have access to human-generated content will still be able to build high-quality large language models.
While the rise of AI-generated content presents new challenges such as model collapse, the continued use of human-generated content and the development of technical solutions can help mitigate these issues.
Looks like the journey of AI in our workplaces is shaping up to be a tale of coexistence rather than conquest.
3 Blog Post that Matter to You This Week
Insight Thought of the Week
This week we reflect on one of our favorite executive performance coach's blog post titled Don't let avoidance hamper your growth:
Next time you feel tempted to run away from a difficult situation, remember that the relief that comes with avoidance is temporary — but overcoming obstacles will help you stack confidence, and it will fuel you through in taking on the next challenge…and the next.
Embrace these difficult situations. They have a flywheel effect when you meet them….turning those hard moments, setbacks, and difficult conversations into things that push you ahead instead of holding you back. What messages are you telling yourself?
Will it be difficult? Yes…but so is pushing a massive boulder across an open field. Even though you might struggle, you’ll also build strength, resolve, and momentum. You’ll be able to see the progress you’ve made — and know exactly what you’re capable of — and that force of self-belief will keep you moving forward further and faster.
Difficult situations are inevitable.
You can avoid them or you can conquer them, but that choice is up to you.
Have a great week,
