#004 Safety Dance
There is no doubt that AI has the potential to be as transformative as the industrial and scientific revolutions, in the view of the experts at Anthropic. The exponential increases in computing power we've seen lend strong support to this perspective. Just consider systems like GPT-3, trained on vast arrays of GPUs for weeks - it provides a glimpse into the massive resources now deployed for AI development. In fact, we think within a decade, AI could realistically match or exceed human capabilities for many intellectual tasks.
However, this incredibly rapid progress also poses a critical challenge: ensuring alignment between AI systems and human values/goals. Researchers use the term "AI alignment" to describe the need for AI to reliably complete assigned tasks in ways that are beneficial, not harmful, to human beings. As AI becomes more advanced, the risks of misalignment also grow, raising the possibility of AI behavior that defies our intentions and interests.
The risks of rushing poorly aligned AI systems into deployment are substantial, whether by corporations or nations competing in an AI race. We could end up with AI that deceives us or makes dangerous errors, given inadequate safety precautions. The societal impacts of AI misalignment could be severe indeed.
Anthropic is one company pursuing vital research to address AI safety and alignment, such as preventing deception and making systems more robust. But it remains unclear if these techniques will keep pace with AI capabilities advancing at breakneck speed.
There is no denying the tremendous potential of AI overall. But we must proceed wisely, prioritizing safety and alignment at every step. Otherwise these powerful technologies may not integrate into society in a way that enhances human values.
